2 October, Gandhi’s birthday, is commemorated annually as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday in India and worldwide as the International Day of Nonviolence.
Lawyer, social activist and exponent of non-violent protest, Mahatma Gandhi is hailed by many as the ‘father of India’. His round, steel-rimmed spectacles were sold for a record £39,780 at an auction in April 2012. The original metal case bore the name H. Cannam Optician, 23 St. Aldate Street Gloucester. They were bought by Gandhi when he was a student in England in the 1890s. “These gave me the vision to free India,” he said.
