22 November 2018: Karl Lagerfeld switched on the Christmas lights at the Champs-Élysées (wearing sunnies, of course). This was to be his final public appearance — he passed away three months later, aged 85.
Powdered white ponytail, check. Oversized starched white collar, check. Black fingerless gloves, check. Big black-framed shades, check. Fashion designer Karl ‘Kaiser’ Lagerfeld’s signature look was all about his personal dandy style, right? Well, all apart from his deep rectangular sunglasses, apparently. It turns out they were more for protection: “When I was very young, I got a glass of whisky in my face by accident,” he once confided to a fashion magazine. “If I had been without my glasses, I would have lost an eye. So, I never go out without my trademark dark glasses.”
