25 March 1947: Reginald Kenneth Dwight (later to become Elton Hercules John) was born in Pinner, Middlesex. “Don't judge the picture by the frame, every man is not the same”, is a line from his 1992 song ‘Understanding Women’.

Singer-songwriter and all-round national treasure Elton John is estimated to have a collection of 250,000 glasses and sunglasses. From extravagantly feathered, to brilliantly bejewelled, to outré bins featuring garden gnomes, palm trees and windscreen wipers, he’s made every style his own over the decades. And of course, he has a walk-in, temperature-controlled room complete with bespoke display shelving, to house his precious specs. Ironically, Elton had lens implant surgery in 2003, so doesn’t actually need to wear glasses anymore.
